Elders

David Magowan was born in Jamaica to missionary parents, but spent most of his childhood in Northern Ireland. After graduating from Cambridge University in 1984 he worked as an airport civil engineer for a consultancy firm in Basingstoke. Following theological study at Westminster Seminary California, David was called in 2001 as pastor of Whitby Evangelical Church, and moved from there to Carey in September 2009. David is married to Elinor and they have two daughters, Angharad (married to Dewi) and Dilys (married to Sagar).

David is currently leading our new church plant in Woodley on Sunday mornings.

John Heron is married to Philippa and they have two grown up children, Lucy, (married to Ben) and Will. John was born and grew up in beautiful Cornwall, before studying Estate Management at Kingston University, where he met Philly at the Christian Union. He then worked for a Housing Association before being sent by Hook Evangelical Church, to train at Oak Hill College. John served at Beccles Baptist Church in Suffolk for 3 years, before moving to Bedfordshire, where he was the Pastor of Sharnbrook Evangelical Church for 16 years.

John and Philly moved to Reading in 2024, when John joined Carey as Pastor.

Richard grew up in Epsom, before studying English literature in Aberystwyth, where he became a Christian. After a few years as a primary school teacher, he and Dorcas moved to Reading in 2011, where Richard worked as an apprentice with Carey. After studying theology at WEST, Bridgend, Richard served as an assistant pastor in Bournemouth. He moved to take up the role of outreach worker at Carey in January 2018. He and Dorcas have three children.

His primary role is equipping the church to reach its neighbours with the good news of Jesus Christ.
