Christmas services

Please join us this Christmas for our Carol Services – there’ll be a mix of modern and traditional carols and songs, along with a Christmas message, and seasonal treats served with a cuppa afterwards. Everyone is very welcome! There is also a service on Christmas day.

“Peace on earth”…

…words spoken over 2,000 years ago, 3,000 miles away, in the little town of Bethlehem.

Though the speaker was an angel from God, it might seem they didn’t understand our modern Christmas! December can be one of the least peaceful times of the year. So much rushing around, whether in Broad Street or online, to find the perfect presents. Spending time with family is lovely, but can mean a heightened potential for family arguments. That’s without mentioning that wars don’t stop for Christmas.

In fact, the angel wasn’t naïve: the scene in Bethlehem wasn’t peaceful back then either. The people of the land were under the heel of an uncaring empire. Their own king, Herod, was a self-serving, bloodthirsty ruler. Mary and Joseph, who we see so much of in the Christmas story, had just undergone a long stressful journey because of bureaucratic busybodies.

So why this claim that Christmas is a time of peace on earth? Because of the newborn baby.
Jesus Christ: the One who came to bring peace.

Jesus brought peace in many ways; the people he healed, fed, and served would attest to that. But the greatest peace he brings is peace between God and people. A peace broken by our sin, but restored through Jesus’ death and rising again in our place.

Carey Baptist Church are a group of people who have found Jesus trustworthy and, through entrusting ourselves to him, have a taste of that wonderful peace he offers.
